Golf Cart Lights & 12V Wiring in Pinehurst

A headlight that goes out the night before you need the cart, lights that quit the day a lithium pack went in, or a cart that needs a light kit before it can be driven on Pinehurst streets after sunset: all of these are the cart’s 12-volt side, and none of them is a battery pack problem.

Two electrical systems on one cart

The drive system runs on the whole pack, 36 or 48 volts, through the solenoid, controller and motor. The lights and accessories run on 12 volts, like a car. Something has to supply that 12 volts. On a well-built cart it is a voltage reducer, a small converter that steps the pack voltage down. On many older carts it is a pair of wires tapped across one or two batteries in the lead-acid pack.

That difference explains most lighting calls:

  • One light out, the rest fine: the lamp, its connector, or its ground.
  • All lights out, cart drives normally: a fuse, the light switch, or the 12V supply.
  • Lights died the day a lithium pack went in: the old battery tap is gone and nothing replaced it.
  • Lights dim or flicker, worse over bumps: a corroded or loose ground, which Sandhills humidity and pollen make more common than you would expect.

Lithium conversions and the 12V side

A lithium pack is a single sealed battery. There is no midpoint to tap, so any light or accessory that was wired across part of the old lead-acid pack stops working the moment the pack comes out. The right fix is a voltage reducer sized to the load (headlights, tail lights, turn signals, horn, any USB or stereo) with its own fuse, not a jumper to somewhere it happens to light up.

If you installed a lithium pack yourself and something is not right, whether the cart will not drive, will not charge, or only the lights are dead, call rather than guessing further. A tech should trace the main cables, the charger connection, the solenoid and controller feeds and the 12V circuit before replacing anything. The pack options themselves are on the battery replacement page.

Lights and the Pinehurst ordinance

Village of Pinehurst ordinance section 71.17 permits golf carts on village streets with stickers and mirrors, and limits them to daylight unless they carry two front lamps (or a cart-specific halogen light bar) visible from 300 feet and two red rear lamps visible from 200 feet. The full rules, including which streets are off limits, are on the Pinehurst golf cart ordinance page. Whispering Pines runs its own registration, covered on the Whispering Pines page.

For repair, that means a working light kit is not an accessory on a Pinehurst street cart. It is what lets you drive home after dinner.

Pricing

JobPrice
DiagnosisIncluded in the service call, usually applied toward the repair
Lighting circuit repair (lamp, connector, ground, switch, fuse)$75 to $200
Light kit install (headlights and tail lights meeting Pinehurst visibility distances)$200 to $450
Turn signal and brake light kit$150 to $350

These match the pricing page. A voltage reducer, or wiring put right after a lithium install, is quoted after the diagnosis, and you see the price before any work starts.

What to mention when you call

  1. What stopped working, and whether it was one light or everything.
  2. What changed recently: a new battery pack, a lithium conversion, or a light kit fitted.
  3. Brand and rough year. A Club Car Precedent, an older E-Z-GO and a new ICON are wired differently.

Mobile techs reach homes in Pinehurst, Southern Pines, Aberdeen, Whispering Pines, Seven Lakes, and Carthage. If the cart will not move at all, start with clicks but won’t move.

Frequently Asked Questions

One headlight went out on my cart. Is that a quick fix?

Usually. One lamp out while the other works points at that lamp, its bulb or LED module, its connector, or its ground, not the whole circuit. Lighting circuit repair runs $75 to $200 at your home. If both headlights went out together, the fault is upstream: a fuse, the light switch, or the 12V supply that feeds everything.

My lights stopped working after I put in a lithium battery. Why?

On many older carts the lights never had a proper 12V supply. They were wired across one or two batteries of the lead-acid pack. A lithium pack is one sealed battery with no point in the middle to tap, so when the old batteries come out the lights have nothing to connect to. The fix is a voltage reducer (a DC-DC converter) sized to the lights and accessories, wired and fused properly.

I tried to install a lithium pack myself and something is wrong with the wiring. Can you sort it out?

Yes. That is a common call. The job is to trace the main pack cables, the charger connection, the controller and solenoid feeds, and the 12V side, and put right whatever is wrong. Tell us the pack brand and voltage and whether the cart drives, charges, or does nothing, so the tech can bring the right parts.

What lights does Pinehurst require to drive after dark?

Village of Pinehurst ordinance section 71.17 allows street operation between sunset and sunrise only with two front lamps (or a cart-specific halogen light bar) visible from 300 feet and two red rear lamps visible from 200 feet. Without them, a cart is limited to daylight. Mirrors and current village stickers are required either way.
