Pine Pollen, Sand, and Humidity: A Sandhills Golf Cart Maintenance Calendar

Pinehurst Golf Cart Repair gets asked one question more than any other after “how much”: what should I actually be doing to this cart, and when? Here is the answer for the Sandhills specifically. The short version: water flooded batteries monthly from May through September, wash the pollen off the battery tops in April, check brakes and tires once a year because of the sand, and load-test the pack in October before the freezes find the weak battery for you. The long version follows, month by month, with the reasons.
The three things that wear out a Moore County cart
Heat. NOAA’s 1991 to 2020 climate normals for the Carthage station, the county’s long-running weather site, put the July average high at 90.3°F, August at 87.8°F, and count about 55 days a year at 90°F or above. The Fayetteville airport station, on the coastal-plain side of the county line, counts 70. Inside a flooded lead-acid battery, heat evaporates water out of the electrolyte, and once the level drops below the top of the plates, the exposed lead sulfates and permanently loses capacity. Heat also raises self-discharge, so a cart that sits between rounds in a hot garage loses charge faster and gets recharged from lower, which is more wear per cycle. This is why lead-acid packs that could last six years often last four here.
Pollen. Longleaf pine pollinates in early spring, and the Sandhills are longleaf country. The USDA soil survey for Moore County lists longleaf pine, turkey oak, and blackjack oak as the native cover across the Candor-Ailey-Vaucluse soils that make up about half the county. The yellow film that coats every surface in March and April is not just an annoyance. On a battery top it mixes with humidity into a mildly conductive paste that bridges terminals, self-discharges the pack, and speeds corrosion. In charger and controller vents it blocks airflow and sets up the thermal shutdowns that show up in July.
Sand. The Candor series is described by the Natural Resources Conservation Service as somewhat excessively drained sand with rapid permeability, and Candor sand alone covers more than 74,000 of the county’s 451,552 acres. It is loose, dry, fine, and abrasive. It rides in on tires and settles into brake drums, wheel bearings, and pedal linkages, and it scrubs tread off tires on unpaved paths.
And a fourth, in its way: cold. The Carthage station averages about 62 nights a year at or below freezing, with a January average low of 30.6°F. Cold does not damage a healthy battery, but it cuts the current a marginal one can deliver, so the weak battery in a six-battery string reveals itself on the first frosty morning.
The calendar
January and February: the cold reveal
Ride season continues in the Sandhills, and this is when weak batteries strand people. If the cart hesitates on the first press of the pedal on a cold morning or loses range it had in the fall, get a load test on each battery. One bad battery drags down five good ones, and on a young pack replacing that one is the fix. Keep flooded batteries fully charged; a discharged battery’s electrolyte is mostly water and can freeze, while a charged one will not at any temperature Moore County sees. Water every six to eight weeks in the cool months.
March: pollen arrives
Longleaf and the other Sandhills pines shed pollen through early spring. Do not fight it yet; there is no point washing a cart that will be yellow again tomorrow. Do keep the charger vents clear and the cart covered if it lives outside. Check tire pressure: most cart tires want 18 to 22 psi, and underinflated tires flex, run hot, and wear their shoulders on sand.
April: the spring service
Once the pollen has mostly settled, this is the most important visit of the year. Wash the battery tops with a baking-soda solution to neutralize the acid-and-pollen film, rinse, and dry. Clean the terminals to bare metal and coat them. Blow out the charger and controller vents. Load-test every battery and write the readings down, so you can watch the pack age year over year. Water after a full charge. Clean the sand out of the brake drums, adjust the shoes, and check bearing play. Verify lights and mirrors, which the Village of Pinehurst’s ordinance requires on any street cart. This is the tune-up service in full, $100 to $200 on an electric cart.
May: watering season begins
Start the monthly watering schedule. Distilled water only, added after a full charge, to about a quarter inch above the plates and never to the top of the fill well. Overfilling pushes electrolyte out on the next charge and leaves corrosive residue on the battery top. Check the charger’s finish: it should hold at absorption voltage until current tapers, then shut off. A charger that quits early leaves sulfate on the plates, and sulfate that sits through a hot summer hardens.
June through August: heat management
Water every month without fail. Park in shade or a garage when you can; a cart in the sun on a 90°F day sees a battery compartment well above air temperature. Recharge fully after every use, even short ones, because partial charges plus heat is the combination that kills packs. If the cart will sit for two weeks or more (a summer trip north is common in Pinehurst), charge it fully, water it, and disconnect the main negative or leave it on a maintenance charger; self-discharge in August heat will otherwise drop a pack below the threshold where an automatic charger will even start. Watch for thermal shutdowns: a controller that quits after ten minutes on a hot afternoon usually has pollen-packed heat-sink fins, and the charger and controller vents need a cleanout.
September: the wettest month, and the return
Carthage normals make September the wettest month of the year at 5.67 inches, and July through September together bring more than 15 inches. Humidity in a closed garage keeps terminals and charge-port pins oxidizing. If the cart sat through the summer, this is the return-from-storage visit: load test first, before assuming the pack died. Many packs survive a summer sit if they were stored charged; a $150 service confirms it, and a $1,000 replacement is avoided.
October: the fall service
The second most important visit. Load-test the pack again and compare against April’s readings; a battery that has dropped noticeably is the one that will fail in February. Water, clean terminals, and go through brakes and tires before the winter riding season, when the weather is the best of the year for it. If the load test says the pack is at the end, October is the time to replace it, with the full winter riding season ahead rather than a dead cart in January.
November and December: ride, and keep it charged
Peak riding weather in the Sandhills. Keep the pack fully charged after every use, water every six to eight weeks, and check that the lights work, since sunset comes early and Pinehurst’s ordinance limits unlit carts to daylight hours.
The two-line version
Two visits a year: April, after the pollen, and October, before the cold. Between them, water monthly in the hot months and recharge fully after every ride. That schedule is the difference between a four-year pack and a six-year pack, which in dollar terms is about $250 a year, and it is the difference between a cart that starts on a cold morning and one that does not.
